Shipbuilder Henry J Kaiser Decided To Make The Automotive Industry His Port Of Call After The Close Of World War Ii. Teaming With Graham-paige Executive Joseph Frazer, Kaiser Moved Quickly To Beat The Major Makers Into Production Of An All New Postwar Car. The Result Was A Novel Looking Straight Sided Design With Definite Appeal To Buyers Of The Day. The 1953 Manhattan Had Style And Glass - Lots Of Glass. The Manhattans Were Perhaps Affectionately Called The Rolling Greenhouses. This Model Also Had Dart Shaped Window Sill Moldings, A Wide Chrome Side Spear Running From Front To Rear Fender, Bumper Wing Caps And A Nameplate High On The Trailing Edge Of The Front Fendersides. On The Interior Dash The Instrument Arrangement Was Also Unique, With One Large Pod In The Middle, Four Other Gauges Arranged In A Fan Shape And Some Funky Numbers On The Circular Speedometer. The Column Shifter Operated An Automatic Transmission. Very Unique Styling Of Roof Lines. Manhattan Interiors Often Combined Fabric Like Luxura Cloth And One Of Kaiser's New Heavy-duty Vinyls; The Patterned Bambu Vinyl That Was Used Were Made By Low- Pressure Refrigerated Embossing.
