Best of the West

With notorious and often exaggerated tales of his life and a very infamous story of his demise, the legacy and legend surrounding Wild West gunslinger James “Wild Bill” Hickok is full of mystery, adventure and rugged reality. It is with that spirit in mind that Deadwood celebrates its local lore with Wild Bill Days on June 18th and 19th; a weekend full of music, events and opportunities to learn more about what the Wild West has to offer.

Wild Bill Days will feature some incredible local and national talent during their free live concerts on Main Street. Headlining this year’s event will be Ronnie Milsap on Friday night and Jo Dee Messina on Saturday night while local artists will keep Main Street swaying throughout the weekend.

While Wild Bill Days officially kicks off with sunrise yoga and Zumba, family fun night at the Raptor Center and a free concert in Outlaw Square on Thursday night, the majority of the events start on Friday where Main Street plays host to most.

Saturday June 19th is the 7th Annual Wild Bill Days Classic Car and Memorabilia Auction. The kick off to this years event starts promptly at 9AM. McPherson Auction and Realty was started by Dale McPherson in 1949 and has been an innovative pioneer in the auction sector throughout the Midwest, and now hosts auctions throughout the United States. This generational family-owned and operated business has always had a passion for the Black Hills, giving back when they can. McPherson Auction, now ran by his two sons Kevin and Todd McPherson, have been hosting professional auctions for decades.

Both Kevin and Todd have always had a passion for people and cars and this interested them in creating a classic car and summer toy auction at the beginning of the summer as their Kool Deadwood Nights Classic Car Auction has a great following towards the end of the car season. Kevin states “We landed on Wild Bill Days weekend as there are free concerts that we wanted to help sponsor to bring more tourism

to the state of South Dakota and Deadwood in general.”

This year’s event will be held inside Deadwood Mt. Grand’s Event Center; this annual event will showcase and consign some of the most incredible items in the automotive industry. Nearly 75 exceptional, unique classic cars and additional automotive memorabilia will be up for sale including a line-up of summer toys featuring; ATV's, side-by-sides, motorcycles and campers! Both Todd and Kevin have enjoyed the auction business and cherish the people they have met and done business with over the years, selling cars as high as $200,000 in Deadwood at their annual events.

If you are a lover of classics and looking for some entertainment, the 7th Annual Wild Bill Days Classic Car and Memorabilia Auction is one you won't want to miss. In the event that you are unable to attend but are interested in viewing live and online, simulcast bidding will be available for your convenience. If you have a car you would like to auction, there is still time! For additional information, contact McPherson Auction and Realty at (605) 348-1369 or visit them on their website at McPhersonAuction.com for the latest updates of cars to be auctioned, as well as many other events they host this summer.

Classic Car Auction check-in is at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center in Deadwood, SD, from noon to 5PM on Friday with an auction starting at 9AM Saturday, June 19th.

If you are looking for fun for all ages and canines, attend the 13th Annual National DockDogs competition which runs every hour and a half on Main Street in front of the Franklin Hotel. A mix between track and field and aquatics, dogs compete in these “heats” for the longest jump and quickest retrieval.

On both Friday and Saturday, those who have come down with gold fever can participate in panning and sluicing demonstrations by Northern Hills Prospectors. Those that are feeling lucky and want to try their hand at panning can hit the “pay dirt” for a fee.

Those who enjoy history and books will be excited to learn more about renowned Native American legend, Geronimo, for “History on the Lawn” Friday at noon. Saturday brings an opportunity to attend Deadwood Reads, where more than 70 authors of many genres will be present for this free, family-friendly book fair. There will also be prizes and a few raffled baskets to benefit Shiloh Horse Rescue
of Deadwood.

Whether accomplished with the thundering of hooves or the growling of an engine, going fast has always been part of the West’s appeal. Wide open spaces of the Black Hills will be the perfect place to participate in some incredible opportunities for automotive fun. As part of Wild Bill Days, the Wild Bill Motorcycle Classic and $20 Poker Run through the hills will be an incredible way to feel lucky and free.

Throughout the Wild Bill Days weekend, people of all ages can enjoy the rich and rugged history of Deadwood while also competing, cruising, classic cars and concert-going.
