Striking Cobra
In a quest for acceleration supremacy, manufacturers produce high-powered, head-snapping, g-force thrusting vehicles that sprint down the track, unbelievably quick and insanely fast. For years, the European supercars have dominated the game of quickness. Lamborghini, Porsche, Bugatti, Ferrari, and many more, have all shown that their production speedsters are the ones to beat.
For instance, in 2012 a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 SuperSport turned in an unprecedented 2.46 second 0-60 time. Also in 2012, a Lamborghini Aventador’s
0-60 time was 2.7 seconds. In 2011 a Porsche 911 Turbo S clocked a 2.9 second time and in 2012 a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta ran a 3.1 second time.
Recently, the three American automakers have joined in this quest and produced a few rockets of their own. Chevrolet has the Corvette C6 ZR1 that managed a run in 3.3 seconds in 2009. A Dodge Viper SRT-10 in 2013 and in 2006 a Mustang Saleen S7 twin-turbo came close to the Vette with a 3.4 second run each.
The Bugatti currently holds the quickest time for a 0-60 run from a production vehicle.
However, in 2012 a Mustang Cobra Jet blew everyone away with a record-shattering run and a 1.52 second 0-60 time. Don’t celebrate yet. The time was disqualified because even though it was a production vehicle — factory-built — and sold by Ford, it was considered not to be legal
for the road, so the time was disallowed.
Well, Ford has done it again. They are producing another production model Mustang Cobra Jet, a drag exclusive car, with a few new features and two new colors: Gotta Have It Green and Cobra Jet Flat Black. A new three-speed racing transmission and a parachute mount for speeds
in excess of 150 mph are also available.
But, the block is aluminum, has DOHC, and a supercharger. only 50 units will be sold.
Even with less horsepower than most of the other production speed demons, the Stang will once again KICK-BUTT in the acceleration department. The 0-60 time is estimated to be the same as the record-breaking, but not allowed 1.52 seconds. But it doesn’t stop there, 0-100 is less than most vehicles’ 0-60 times, with a 3.26 second time.
And when the quarter-mile run is over, the Cobra Jet will dominate its class with an estimated 7.8 second run at 174.4 mph. Hold on to your hats, we’re not finished, as the top speed for this American-made rocket is estimated at 315 mph. WOW!!!
This car is also approved for the NHRA in Stock and Super Stock classes.
In conclusion, with all the hype on who has the quickest and fastest car, it is debated constantly between friends, co-workers, and racing enthusiasts alike. Just look at the stats and come to your own conclusion.
