Winterfest of Wheels Showcases 1962 Nash

Written By: Molly Barari

Most winters in South Dakota, the sky is grey and the ground is white. This winter, the Sioux Falls Convention Center will cheer things up with a hot red 1962 Nash Metropolitan – a featured car at the 2019 Winterfest of Wheels event held February 1-3.

The ’62 Nash Metropolitan is owned by Roger and Barree Boettcher of Andover, Minnesota. They have taken the vehicle to multiple car shows over the past year, including Toppers in Fargo, GSTA in St. Paul, World of Wheels, and St. Paul Street Machine NATS. They also attended Back to the 50s at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, where the extended Boettcher family displayed multiple vehicles, earning the name “Boettcher Corner.”

This will be the Boettchers’ first year attending Winterfest with their Nash Metropolitan. And Winterfest is excited to have the ’62 Nash Metropolitan, which was given the Minnesota Street Rod Association’s (MRSA) Custom of the Year award last year.

Of course, the Nash Metropolitan took lots of time and effort to make it what it is today. The Boettchers bought the car when their grandson was 3 years old, and he just graduated from high school, so it took them over 14 years to finish it. Their son had it at his shop and did all the fabrication work, with over 1,000 hours of welding.

When you come to Winterfest this year, be sure to check out the ’62 Nash Metropolitan’s unique characteristics. The two-door car has its share of aluminum and chrome, with a 4.3 V 6 engine with a 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor and 200 4R transmission, and an S10 rear end narrowed about 12 inches. It also features air bags that can make it go down to an inch and a half off the ground.

Noticeable right away is the Nash’s PPG hot red paint – painted by The Hot Rod Factory in East Bethel, 14-inch torque trust wheels, smooth bumpers and frenched headlights. You’ll also want to check out its camel leather interior with Metropolitan “M’s” embroidered in the seats. The car’s suicide doors make it easy for the couple to slide into the seats.

Other highlights of this Nash Metropolitan include its air ride, molded grill, custom dash, and center console made with exhaust pipes that were bent and formed. It also has ‘54 Chevy tail lights, and a removed spare tire and gas filler.

The car features a trunk in the back and a fat man front end. There are also 3” cup holders which are perfect for long road trips, like the Boettchers’ Des Moines last year. In fact, the Boettchers put on 3,000 miles last year.

Roger said the Nash has taken “countless hours to get to this point, but the end result has been worth every minute!”

Weekend passes to the Winterfest of Wheels event are available for $17 and can be purchased in advance at J & L Harley Davidson. All profits from the event go to Cure Kids Cancer, and children 12 and under are free if accompanied by an adult.

In addition to the ’62 Nash Metropolitan, there will be many other award-winning vehicles and rarely seen collector cars. There will be special guest appearances, raffle drawings, commemorative awards for all accepted entries, and even a “Ditch Your Man” shopping room for the ladies.

Rev up your engines and spice up your winter season by participating in this fun event!
